There are fears the construction industry could be shut down, as the Government considers tighter lockdown measures in England.

Scientific advisers have warned Boris Johnson that the current rules do not go far enough, and more needs to be done to stem the rapid spread of Covid-19.

Another 389,000 people tested positive for the virus in the last seven days, and more than 83,000 people have now died since the start of the pandemic.

Construction has so far been allowed to continue during England’s third national lockdown.

Government guidance states: “You can only leave home for work purposes where it is unreasonable for you to do your job from home, including but not limited to people who work within critical national infrastructure, construction or manufacturing that require in-person attendance.”

Will construction be shut down in England?

A spokesman for the Prime Minister refused to rule out restrictions for construction and manufacturing on Tuesday.

Downing Street said: “If we believe there is a need to take further action we will.”

New Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who replaced Alok Sharma last Friday, has said he believes the construction industry should be allowed to keep going.

“It is vital that construction continues through these unsettling times and I want to reassure you that the government values the crucial contribution your sector is making,” he wrote in an open letter this week.

He added: “I would like to make it clear that where it is essential to travel or to stay in accommodation, whether to get to your work or for the purposes of carrying out your work, those in the industry are able to do so.”

Current rules for construction sites

Construction workers have been told to social distance where possible, and maintain hygiene standards such as hand-washing.

The Construction Leadership Council has drawn together a list of re commendations for keeping work environments Covid-secure.

Recommendations include avoiding face-to-face working, staggered break times and travelling to work with as few people as possible – and always the same group.
